LC State Admissions/Placement Testing

We offer the ALEKS Math and WPE English Placement Exams for LC State admittance and course placement. We also offer the ACT Residual Exam on an as needed basis.  We proctor the HESI A2 exam for applicants of the LC State Radiographic Science Program.

ALEKS Math Placement

  1. Contact the Testing Center to request to take the math placement test and then create your ALEKS account.
    1. Instructions for creating your ALEKS account will be emailed to you once you contact the Testing Center and request to take the ALEKS Math Placement Exam.
    2. There is a fee of $20 (plus tax) paid to ALEKS when you create your account
  2. Take the practice, unproctored test and practice in the Prep and Learning Modules.
  3. Schedule an appointment for your proctored test.
    1. Contact via phone 208-792-2100.
    2. Fill out the Appointment Request Form.
    3. Stop in and make an appointment in person, Library Room 161.
  4. Pay the $5 proctoring fee to LC State.
    1. Pay online with credit or debit card from the Testing Center homepage.
    2. Pay the campus cashier in the Administration Building with cash or check.
  5. Arrive at your test appointment 10 minutes early for check-in and bring the following required items:
    1. Receipt from ALEKS for the $20 (plus tax) account fee.
    2. Receipt from the $5 proctoring fee paid to LCSC, if paid to the cashier.
      • If paid online, a receipt is automatically emailed to the Testing Center.
    3. Current, valid, physical picture ID.
    4. ALEKS user name and password.

ALEKS accounts must be created with an LC State course code.  This is given in the instructions.

Yes. Below are several different options available to those who cannot come to the LC State campus Testing Center.


You can test at home using your own PC or Mac computer and a webcam.  Phones, tablets, or Chromebooks WILL NOT work.

  1. Pay the $5 test fee online to LC State.
  2. Email the Testing Center and request to take the ALEKS Math placement test.
    1. Instructions for creating your account and how to test will then be emailed to you.
  3. Follow the instructions to create your account and pay the $20 fee to ALEKS.
  4. Follow the instructions for practicing, downloading the required browser, and taking your placement test.
    1. You will download a special browser and use your webcam to record the testing session.

You can find a qualified proctor and fill out the Proctor Request Form – LC State Distance Students form.

  • This form must be sent in a minimum of 1 week prior to the anticipated testing date to ensure adequate time to fulfill the request.
  • You will need to create your ALEKS account and pay the $20 fee by following the directions we send to you through email.
  • We will send proctoring instructions to your proctor through email.
    • Students are responsible for paying the $20 fee to ALEKS AND any fee their proctoring site may charge.

You can test at the LC State Coeur d'Alene office with no additional proctoring fee. You will only be responsible for paying the $20 fee to ALEKS. If you want to test at this location you must contact that office directly to make an appointment.

  • Any Career and Technical program applicant.
  • Academic applicants (21 years and over) who have never taken the ACT or SAT or have not taken a placement test within the past five years are highly encouraged to take ALEKS for adequate math placement.
  • Applicants under age 21 with an ACT or SAT score that want to attempt to place into a higher math class.
  • Transfer students with 14 or fewer credits and are not transferring any math credits.

Test scores are available immediately after testing. You will receive one copy of your proctored test results at the Testing Center.  Admissions will download ALEKS scores and input them into your student account.

You can first take one unproctored test at home for practice.

You are allowed to take a proctored ALEKS test twice.

Students are not allowed to register for and start a math class and then come take the ALEKS test to place higher without permission from the Math Division Chair.

Yes, please contact your school first to get the information needed to create your ALEKS account with their course code and to request the proctor password be sent to LC State. After you have contacted your school to arrange for the exam to be taken at LC State, contact us to make an appointment.

Yes, please follow the procedures below.

  • Print the Authorization to Share ALEKS Test Results form*.
  • Fill out the form in its entirety and be sure to sign and date the bottom.
    • Original signature is required, digital signature is not acceptable.
  • Send the form to the Testing Center via email, fax or deliver it in person.

* The LC State Testing Center must have the Authorization to Share ALEKS Test Results form on file before any results are sent.

English Placement (WPE)

To take the English Placement Exam (WPE):

  • Contact the LC State Testing Center to make an appointment.
  • Pay the $15 testing fee one of two ways.
    • Pay in person the campus cashier in the Administration Building.
    • Pay online with credit or debit card from the Testing Center homepage.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment time for check in and bring the following:
    • Valid, physical picture ID.
    • Receipt for the testing fee payment.
      • if the payment is made online a receipt will automatically be emailed to us.

Students will have 1 hour to type an essay about the prompt they are given. Topics are randomly assigned by Testing Center Staff.

  • We will send proctoring instructions to the proctor through email.

You can test at the LC State Coeur d'Alene office with no additional proctoring fee. You will only be responsible for paying the $10 off campus testing fee to LC State. If you want to test at this location listed you must contact that office directly to make an appointment.

  • Any Career and Technical program applicant.
  • Academic applicants (21 years and over) who have never taken the ACT or SAT or have not taken a placement test within the past five years are highly encouraged to take the WPE for adequate English placement.
  • Academic applicants under age 21 that want to try to place into an English class different from what their ACT or SAT placed them into.
  • Transfer students with 14 or fewer credits who are not transferring any English credits.

Scoring of the exams will be done by English faculty members who are knowledgeable about the expectations for students’ writing skills upon entering LC State English courses.

You will be notified of your placement via email within 3 business days of submitting the placement exam.

The English Placement Exam (WPE) can only be taken one time, with a few specific exceptions:

  • Interference with the testing process caused by problems with technology
  • Distractions during testing
  • Health issues
  • Similar factors as judged by the exam proctor
  • Documentation of successful completion of an Adult Learning Center course in the content area in which a student wishes to retest will serve as justification for one additional WPE retake.

If you feel you have been inaccurately placed via the WPE, you will be allowed to seek alternative placement through an exam administered by the Director of Writing in the Humanities Division.

No, this writing placement exam is for internal use at LC State only.

HESI A2 - LC State Radiographic Science

To make an appointment contact the Testing Center:

Bring the following items with you to your exam appointment:

  • Receipt for payment to Evolve.
  • Receipt for payment to LC State - if paid to the campus cashier.
    • If paid online a receipt is emailed to the Testing Center automatically.
  • Evolve user name and password.
  • Valid, physical picture ID.

There are two fees for the HESI A2 Exam.

  • $15 testing fee is paid to LC State one of two ways.
    • pay online with credit or debit card from the Testing Center homepage.
    • paid to the campus cashier in the Administration Building.
  • $42 plus tax (subject to change without notice) is paid online to Evolve when creating your account for testing.

Scores are available immediately after completion of the exam.

You will print your score report from home and attach it to your application.

ACT Residual Testing

The ACT Residual can only be taken if an LC State deadline comes before the next ACT national testing date.  If there is a national testing date prior to a required deadline students must sign up for the national test.

*Effective 9/1/21 - The LC State Testing Center is currently not offering the ACT Residual exam


Contact the Testing Center at 208.792.2100 to make an appointment.

Bring the following items to your appointment:

  • Receipt for the testing payment - fee is paid in person to the cashier in the Administration Building.
  • Valid, physical picture ID.
  • Approved calculator.

Scratch paper and pencils will be provided for testing.

There will be a 10-15 min break mid-way through the exam.  You can bring a snack or drink for this break.

The current fee for this exam is $70 (subject to change).  This fee is paid in person to the cashier in the Administration Building.

The ACT residual test can be taken at LC State only by students who have applied to LC State.  The test scores for the residual cannot be sent to other schools. 

LC State charges a non-refundable service fee for credit/debit card transactions.
